The first day home with a new born baby can be both exciting
and challenging for new parents. Most new parents are
surprised by how big of an adjustment they have to make to
their lifestyle once a new baby enters the picture.
The first month the parents are on the baby’s schedule, and
that usually means feeding the baby every two to three hours
during a 24 hour schedule. The majority of time when the
baby is not eating, the baby prefers to sleep.
It is during that time that you may try to introduce your
new baby to the nursery crib. It is also during that time
that one of the two parents should try to take a nap, while
the other parent prepare for the next feeding, and for
whatever else needs to be done around the house.
The big test will be at night when it is time for both
parents to go to bed. If the nursery has a baby monitor,
then it is OK to place the baby in the nursery. If you do
not have a baby monitor, then it is best to have a bassinet
by your bed for your baby to sleep in. Whatever you do,
resist the urge to have your baby sleep in the bed between
the parents. This is the most unsafe option for the baby.
One surefire way to make life easier during the late night
feeding is to make sure the nursery is as close as possible
to your bedroom. It will save you time and some steps when
you need to see about your baby in the middle of the night.
